Riot Mark IV begins with new vocalist Mike DiMeo

Originally released in 1993, NIGHTBREAKER was the eighth album by New York’s Riot and the beginning of the fourth incarnation of the band with new vocalist Mike DiMeo. He ended up sticking with Riot for a dozen years and sang on six studio albums, the most of the five Riot vocalists (second place is a tie between Guy Speranza and Tony Moore, both of which recorded three albums with the band). DiMeo hails from the Deep Purple/Rainbow school of singing as he’s reminiscent of David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner.

Needless to say, Mike is more melodic and commercial-sounding compared to the soaring vocals of Tony Moore, the raspy, soulful work of Rhett Forrester and the youthful dynamo style of original vocalist Speranza.

The challenge for DiMeo was taking over for Moore, who many feel was Riot’s best vocalist, not to mention following-up the one-two punch of THUNDERSTEEL (1988) and THE PRIVILEGE OF POWER (1990), both of which rank at the top of the Riot catalog, along with Moore’s third album, IMMORTAL SOUL (2011), which is my personal favorite.

While I prefer Tony on vocals and therefore his three albums, this is a solid Riot disc and IMHO superior to Rhett Forrester’s last recording with the band, the inconsistent BORN IN AMERICA (1983). There’s a nice mix of heavy, light, fast and commercial.

The title track is heavy & speedy with Mike’s melodic approach keeping the beast at bay. It’s similar with the opening cuts “Soldier” & “Destiny.” Other standouts include the drivin’ & catchy “Babylon” and “Medicine Man,” which shoulda been a hit. “Silent Scream” is poppy melodic rock while “Magic Maker” is another ‘hit’ song in the mold of “Man on the Silver Mountain” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming.” Meanwhile “In Your Eyes” is a sappy piano ballad.

There are two covers, “Burn” by Deep Purple and Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” The album finishes up with a nice redo of “Outlaw” from FIRE DOWN UNDER (1981) with DiMeo’s take on the song. My edition has the bonus track “Black Mountain Woman,” which is another melodic rock ‘hit.’
