Edited one year agoLove the energy in this, the soundstage is great for a live recording, and Devo is on fire here for sure. A fun little record to have. Very pleased to have this in my collection.

Calling this release a "cash grab" would be unkind. But selling this to the public was even unkinder, so it's a cash grab. Released in the shadow of monster hit 'Whip It', was the world really crying out for a sloppily-played live EP cut from a radio concert? Apparently they were in Australia, where the thing went number one. 'Be Stiff' is the only decent cut here and there are better versions of this floating around too. Hope Bob Lewis got some royalties.

I could never get into the idea of Live EP's. They seemed like a waste of time. Why not just press a full live album instead? Oh well.
The EP itself is alright, 4 songs from Freedom Of Choice (the album they were touring for), 1 live only song (an amalgamation of Whip It and Jocko Homo) and 1 old rarity. Good selections and good sound quality.
However, this EP was actually taken from a rare promo only LP recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, which includes (almost) the full show. "Pink Pussycat", "Satisfaction", "Freedom Of Choice" and "Jocko Homo" are missing from this however. The latter 2 are bizarre with them being the centerpiece of the whole show. The Rhino CD release claims that only "Pink Pussycat" oddly.
There isn't exactly a shortage of FOC-era recordings of Devo, so this is an interesting curiosity in the Devo library. -
I like the material on this mini, but it is easily one of the worst examples of record sleeve design the world has ever seen.
