Edited one year agoReferencing Patti LaBelle And Michael McDonald - On My Own: It may have been written and produced by music gods Burt Bacharach and Carol Bayer Sager, but the A-side of this 1986 single is a peculiarly muddy-sounding affair.
It's a great song; Labelle and Macdonald turn in convincing vocal performances, capturing the yearning in the lyrics quite nicely. Somehow it just...plods. I can't work out if it's the production, the arrangement (the drummer sounds as if he/she has fallen asleep from boredom) or the vinyl mastering, but the sound struggles to escape the grooves on Patti LaBelle And Michael McDonald - On My Own.
The B-side, the Patti Labelle song "Stir It Up", from the ubiquitous early-80s Beverley Hills Cop soundtrack, on the other hand, is a lot of fun, and drives along on a punchy beat. Produced by Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey.
