Edited 3 months agoSoft Machine's Third is truly one of the great recordings from the fabled Canterbury Scene. Legend has it that Robert Wyatt was the sole instrumentalist on the first third of "Moon In June" and based on how I would have expected Mike Ratledge to have played it I can believe that this is true. The remaining three sides show us the newer side of the Machine as they moved away from the prog-rock of the first two albums into the jazz-rock that would dominate the remainder of the band's existence. My original copy was the first pressing of the US version in 1970 and it was noisy to say the least. I played the hell out of it, though, so it now has surface noise AND pops/ticks. Alas, the CD version is much cleaner and mastered correctly. (RIP Mike Ratledge, Elton Dean and Hugh Hopper. Who would have figured that Wyatt would be the last one left?)

My press is not cut quiet as some has mentioned. The mixing of the record is not very good though. Very boomy mid tone especially from the synths and bass guitar. It makes the higher frequencies very quiet in comparison, so the cymbals and hi-hats are floating somewhere almost indistinguishable on top of the sound image,

As someone else mentioned, these seem to be cut at very low levels, both my VG+ copies suffer from surface noise. Facelift recording quality is pretty poor but what a great piece!

The music on this release is profound and very deep. It shows the original band (minus Kevin Ayers) at its fully matured best, both in of songwriting and performance, but just as importantly in its overall conceptual approach. Even though they went on to accomplish more greatness without soon-to-depart Robert Wyatt, it arguably represents a high-water mark of the band's output, straddling with ease across genres. It deserves to be a part of any serious jazz-fusion-prog music collection.
A slight caveat: due to limitations of vinyl disc-cutting, some pressings were mastered conservatively low, which increases the chances of annoyances from surface noise. It would therefore be advised to also have a CD copy for quieter, more detailed listening. -
So does this one have 'S 64080' on the spine, front and back? because from the back cover scan i think I can read 66246 which would make it the same as Soft Machine - Third
