My copy has Atlantic Records' label (as pictured) pasted over Test Pressing labels. Includes letter.

This is not a test pressing. It's an advance promo copy rushed out to radio, DJs and reviews after the impact of Zep's first gigs in the US. The pressing plant used whatever labels it had to hand - generic test pressing labels - and these were pasted over with Atlantic Studios labels with hand typed details (of which there are multiple variations and errors because of the individual typing). The release of the first LP was brought forward in the US and promo copies weren't yet ready. The covering letter even describes exactly what it is. Proper test pressings of the first LP exist but this isn't one of them.

I wonder is 'mirrored 73' Lw in a cursive hand, in which case it is 'orthogonal' to the existing stream of matrix letters and numbers .... or rotated 90 degrees.

https://www.popsike.com/LED-ZEPPELIN-Self-Titled-ATLANTIC-TEST-PRESS-LP-with-press-kit/380626053602.html - this has a picture of the presumed photo that is part of the press kit.

Edited 7 years agoFeatured on Pawn Stars Season 15 ep 24 - the appraiser does state this is a Radio / Media promotional pressing with press kit, but the press kit gets separated often. He said a few hundred were pressed. He also stated a 'test pressing' would have had hand written labels. Not sure if he's 100% accurate with the last statement. Letter is dated December 30 1968 from NYC Atlantic office.

I worry about this being labelled as a test pressing. Would it be more accurate to call this a promo copy, let us say because there was a lot of radio stations in the USA or even a review copy. A test pressing would be fewer in number and sent to of the LZ office and US Atlantic office, and as such a number could be arrived at.

I know mine is genuine. It was received by my late wife, marge pettyjohn who then conducted a phone interview with Jimmy Page, wrote the review for the Dallas Morning News and attended the 1969 concert at the Texas State Fair. What would such a package be worth?
Includes:
(1) Test Pressing of first album 1969
(2) Original 1969 Press Kit including 2 photos and 3 press releases
(3) Reviewer’s Package - transcript of 1969 phone interview with Jimmy Page, and copy of resulting published review in the Dallas Morning News by marge pettyjohn -
