Edited 4 years agoOriginally written around the 'Parachutes' sessions 'In My Place' was nearly left on the cutting room floor after the work on Coldplay's sophomore album 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' had primarily finished. It was only after singer Chris Martin overheard guitarist Jonny Buckland idly play it one day that the group decided to record a finished version, and what happened was something quite magical.
Released as the debut single to the band's 2002 record, 'In My Place' is a sweeping ballad that takes the open and acoustic vibe from the past album and amp it up to new heights. With it's playful guitar hook, sorrowful strings and heartbreaking vocals the song manages to expertly emanate what is to come as it's theme would be played in great gusto with the release of 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'. Also included on the single are 2 original b-sides. The first - 'One I Love' - is a steady indie tune that harks back to the jangly days of the genre and has since become a live favourite, taking influences from post-punk & shoe gaze to create a beautifully simple 21st century cult piece. It would later appear on the 'Coldplay Live 2003' DVD after being performed throughout that album's tour. Last on the CD is the oddly titled ' I Bloom Blaum' - a whimsical short that takes notes from the band's early days where Chris Martin straps on an acoustic guitar and sends you to sleep with his softly sung lullaby.
As a single 'In My Place' is a perfect introduction to Coldplay's blossoming talent, long before the days of their larger than life style and managing to stay somewhat humble in this gorgeous glimpse into early 00's contemporary indie. As no b-side compilation has been created (or a proper greatest hits for that matter) to date then it's worth checking out the group's earlier singles as many hold some proper gems from their studio sessions (something that many miss as the age of digital firmly took hold). -
