Edited 3 years agoTHIS box set is the original version. NOT the 5 LP set. Sound and pressing quality of LP sets is questionable and varies a lot. I honestly prefer the CD box set. It even looks nicer. But some fools will pay 300 bucks for the vinyl hype anyway.

I think the question is justified why at least part of the material was not edited by Holger when he is considered the undisputed genius in this field. Irmin and Kuno's imagination was not even enough for an elegant, sensible sequence of pieces! Or wouldn't there have been room for the unreleased hammer track 'Get the Can'? Surely there would have been!
Even if after Holger's death all the questions and answers come too late, it is obvious: The 'Lost Tapes Box' is marked by the calculation and the (somewhat conservative) spirit of the Schmidt family. (Jaki would have thrown everything away anyway...) In the end, one can only be glad that enough bootlegs are circulating and hope that Holger's estate will fall into better hands...

Godzilla Fragment was recorded/mixed by John Moon (3) for Radio Trent in 1976 at Nottingham University not 75.
It is an edit of a 10 minute encore piece used without permissions, tut tut -
Five years after its release this Can box just gets better and better. Lots of deep listening, I keep turning up new things to listen to and delight in. Great for hardcore Canheads. The Malcolm Mooney tracks showcase just how out-there he was, using his voice akin to a sampler or tape loop, just press 'repeat'. Virtually every track in the set sheds new light on the Can back catalogue with proto versions of Can classics, for instance - Vitamin C (Dead Pigeon Suite) and Mother Sky (On the Way To....).
The live tracks are good too and seem to be better quality than some other live releases I've heard (like the CD that came with the Can Box which I was never that impressed by).
Niggles are tiny - I might not have put on Godzilla Frgment which is too short and truncated to be of much interest. Apart from that this is all great stuff. -
During Track 2 "Waiting For The Streetcar", Malcolm Mooney sings the phrase "Waiting For The Streetcar" 170 times.

Edited 12 years agoThis is getting released on quintuple vinyl on December 3rd. There is also a single bootleg LP sampler of this, mixing up the tracklist and even using parts of the actual boxset artwork.
