Over the years I never really ' got off ' on Robert Wyatt, loved his work in the Soft Machine....listened to his solo stuff and read the critical acclaim of ' Rock Bottom ' but could not quite see what all the fuss was about. I can daevid allen doing a solo show up in the Canterbury woods, where he played acoustically a lot of Robert's work....daevid's last book of poetry had taken its name from a Robert song....clearly a love there....read Robert's recent biography....I stopped drinking and it all hit me like one of those balls swinging on a chain. A creative and unique individual, his work has suddenly resonated with me and I can now enjoy it all the second time around......no idea what it was, but it was a block in me....touching music...all his solo stuff grows on you....

I dont know who at Discogs labeled Robert Wyatt's Old Rottenhat LP as "abstract" (look at the last entry in the description column shown above), but, for me, it is anything but. His thoughts are organized with meaning as he weaves his pastoral landscape across the grooves of my 1985 rough trade recording. This is a masterful record, reminiscent of ENO's Before and After Science. There is also a DIY quality to it. The instrumentation is sparce and minimally recorded. But the grooves are rich and deep. Enjoy.
