Edited 2 years agoWith nearly 300 editions and the immense success it receives even to this day, WHEN are we going to get a deluxe CD/LP/DVD edition? It could be a lavishly laid-out box-set with possibly the full album in remastered form, 5.1 surround, the video album, all the remixes and single edits, every inch of artwork used, photographs, a chunky booklet, maybe even an interview with Michael Cretu and his associates? Record labels have so much potential, but it rarely gets utilised. I'll wait for the day.

Release: rip of DVD by Virgin | EMI, 2003
5.1 worth finding! -
I'm not sure which version I have. The Matrix/Runout is SONOPRESS 261209 A 2 but the CDVIR 1 is centred above the barcode on the back and not left aligned like the release page. Also there is a sticker in the case that says "AVL RELEASE DATE 10 DEC 1990 MATTHEW AUSTIN SALLY EDWARDS NEIL ASHBY 071-221 7535".

Sacred & Profane.
"Sadeness" is still a standout track that broke many rules of pop music.
A man & a woman petition their desire to the Marquis De Sade. The
Gregorian Chant (the voice of God?) & the pan flute (the voice of Satan?)
interweave in a seductive serpentine yet aural masterpiece.
"Callas Went Away" is the most beautiful track on the album sampling the
voice of the elegant opera legend Maria Callas. "Mea Culpa" is in similar
vein to "Sadeness" mixing chant/flute/vocals with more of an emphasis
on beat. "Back to the Rivers of Belief" is an ambient epic piece for which
part was truncated into a single.
MCMXC a.D. still comes to mind again and again and never disappoints.
Enigma never really created anything as original as this (due to many lawsuits
for theft of source material). Never the less, Enigma is still a project to watch. -

27 years later, it strikes me that this is essentially a fusion of Zamfir, Gregorian chants, Soul II Soul beats (i.e. a very specific generational rhythm that was essentially coded into the young adults that came of age in the late 1980s and early 1990s), and the mellow, downtempo jazz-pop and melodic minimalism of groups like Double ("Captain Of Her Heart"). The vibe is lifted straight from late '80s balearic aesthetic, crepuscular and relaxing—cousin of New Age. Somehow it worked then and still even works now. I don't take it seriously, yet I can't deny that it succeeds in everything it sets out to do. What Cretu et al were skilled at was at weaving a deceptively simple cloth of feeling using previously existing elements and ideas, then making it seem laughably obvious.

Edited 8 years agoI own MCMXC a.D. (Limited Edition, made in Argentina), also I've checked the Limited Edition made in Europe/, and also check LE made in Russia (Unreal Records of Canada, UNOFFICIAL), but looks like all releases of this LE version contain small sound glitch on the last track - The Rivers of Belief (The Returning Silence).
If you'll listen (carefully/a bit louder) this track then on 03:46 you'll hear short yet somewhat silent glitch at the left channel (on whole disk the time is 57:09).
And - if someone has other countries' releases of this album - please report - does your CD contain the same sound glitch ?
Thanks in advance !
