Having owned all these records separately, I really like the idea of them being all collected together in one 2 LP set...but I just can't get over the sound quality on the first record. Lots of hissing between songs and points during songs where I wonder, "was that a skip or pop just there?" This sounds a lot more like a tape that I would have made for a friend of all this cool Beat stuff in high school than a proper remaster. So while I'm happy to own this and would recommend it to anyone that's a superfan of the band, (also don't pay more than $15 for this) it's more of a purchase to complete your collection. I still think that the OG US pressing that I had of this record sounded better.

Edited one year agoThe dead wax has "BG" etched in it which I assume is Bernie Grundman. He did the remastering of "I Just Can't Stop It" last year too.

The Beat is one of my favorite groups from the 80s, during the decade they produced three albums which were all parts of my growing years. Wha' happen? Is their second, and follow up to their debut classic I just Can't Stop it. On the follow up they expanded their signature Ska style with excursions in Zouk styles from the French Caribbean, dub reggae and post punk funk and pop. I don't think the update in style was well recieved at the time, but Wha' happen was a hit with me and found a lot of play in my teenage bedroom. So of course this was top of my list for this year's RSD ,buoyed by the very satisfying expanded edition of IJCSI from Black Friday 2023. The new expanded vinyl edition of Wha'happen does not disappoint. The remastering is dynamic and bass heavy, revivifying my love for this album. The bonus tracks are great and are not superfluous filler. My one gripe is the yellow vinyl ( Disc 1) was noisy but the remastering shines through; the green vinyl was more quiet. Overall this is welcomed and appreciated.
