Edited 6 years agoSimultaneously better than their detractors would it, but not as brilliant as they themselves thought they were. It's a shame these guys were such addled screw-ups.

Salem's level of success can probably be attributed to the magic of the internet and the insatiable appetite of style-hungry hipsters. Their music is so ridiculously raw and subversive that it's power seems to creep up on you like a phantom bowl pack of hydro. It doesn't hit you right away, but nevertheless you eventually find yourself listening often and craving more. The mood is darker than dark, dirty as a Detroit gutter and oddly emotional. The imagery is more important than it should have to be, without it the music wouldn't be as immediate and understandable...which isn't really a bad thing. The end result is pleasing to those of us who've grown old and tired of the same old genres and sub genres we once worshipped in our not too distant youth. We're a little older now, but not too old to sport inverted crosses under our business suits and bob our heads to Salem's infinite collection of trap beats. King Knight hits hard.
