I love Illmatic but this album still has some killer tracks and I think it comes in a close second.
All personal preference in the end. Simply Vinyl had some very good quality releases.... -
Across all the reissues this is the best sounding version on vinyl. THIS IS THE ONE, a close second is https://discogs.librosgratis.biz/release/28548343-Nas-It-Was-Written

Best NAS album (IMHO).
Outstanding pressing, the records sound absolutely amazing.
Simply Vinyl made a fantastic job here. -
From the intro to the end it felt as if this whole record was not a cohesive oroject "It was Written" was all over the place going from the slavehouse, to the club, to the streets.
The instrumental selection on this project was not remarkable, as the tracklisting featured one of the most forgettable Dr. Dre beats ever on "Nas Is Coming" - and that hook was so atroticious.
I was hyped up to hear this LP after listening to the Illmatic performance at the Kennedy Center; probably as hyped up as Nas was after making an album that could be performed AT the Kennedy Center. "It Was Written" is suh a disappointment in light of that album. If sequel slump could ever be proven - "It Was Written" is the evidence.
As Jay-Z alluded to on his diss track of "The Takeover", this was one of Nas' "eh" albums. "Eh" not "Ether". Speaking of Jigga, I could swear he wrote Foxy's verse on that "The Firm" album ment - song aptly titled "Affirmative Action". And as for "I Gave You Power" ... I've heard better gun persona rhymes on the West Coast in the form of C.O.S.' verse on Lynch Hung's "Something About Susan", and of course Pac's "Me & My Girlfriend".
The best track on this was the R&B collab in the form of "Black Girl Lost", where Nas expressed his shame of Afro-centric females who fall for their respective stereotypes. I do not find it ironic that on such a disappointing LP, Nas finds his footing on a record about ... disappointment.
I am glad I heard the first disc of "Street's Disciple" before this title. "It Was Written: may be better lyrically than a majority of hip-hop records, but all together, it falls short of Nas' holy-grail type discography circa post-2005.
I am scared t even attempt to listen to "Nastradamus" and "I am" , but I'll do it for the love, one day... As everything worth doing should be done.
