The beauty of Bun B's "Trill" saga is that none of the records sound like the other. "Return Of The Trill" has more blues guitar and soul claps than I've heard on any of the previous entries in this legendary series. The Mississippi influence from Big K.R.I.T. works heavily in favor for "Return of The Trill" especially on the storytelling opus "Blood On The Dash" about the dual perspectives of a cop and a citizen stopping at a Valero for their respective vices in an attempt to decompress after a long day only for the situation to become extremely heightened, to the dolo smoking ode "Slow It Down" which begged for a Devin The Dude appearance, but still managed to deliver without that extra Texas connection.
Even though K.R.I.T. handles the majority of the production on "Return of The Trill", Bun and Co. still drop jewels even when K.R.I.T. is not on the 1's and 2's : BeatKing's "Ho's From Da Hood" works as a modern rendition of Cube's "Once Upon A Time In The Projects" and "U A Bitch" is Bun doing his best impression of Pimp C - calling out the FDA and other pillars of Western society with a degree of realism that could get him silenced like his fellow fallen brother-in-arms.
From the James Prince intro through, "Return of The Trill" is Bernard back on his bullshit - without the intention of matching his sound to a collaborative MC or keeping up with a DJ from a different region. "Return of The Trill" is uncompromised Bun at his most comfortable putting Texas in the face of listeners and daring the audience to tell him how they feel.
