This album is one of the basic things of the period when Thrash metal evolved into Death metal. Raw, furious, headbanging metal with fairly simple but catchy riffs. This album has a rather specific atmosphere, there is something sinister in it, imbued with a sense of fear, imminent danger, a kind of cinematic suspense. If we assume that the scene of those years was inspired by the aesthetics of horror, then this is very strongly reflected here.
The reissue from Peaceville was pleasantly surprised and pleased. Judging by the reviews for the reissue of different years (Cyclone Empire), not everything was good, but there is nothing in this press that deserves criticism. Unfortunately, I don't have the opportunity to compare it with other presses, but there is doubt that this is required in this case. But the sound of this particular press has good dynamics, the remastering was carried out very carefully, while preserving the ferocious essence of this record. A dense guitar attack with chaotic solos, a merciless rhythm section, demonic vocals - everything is in its place.
Otherwise, this is a fairly minimalistic edition - an ordinary sleeve, an insert with lyrics and photos (while there is a lot of empty space on both sides). By the anniversary date, it would be nice to release something with commemorative materials, as many bands are doing now, but this variant closer to the original. The yellow vinyl looks appropriate, the mass is generally quiet, although my copy has a slight sand on the A-side, but this is clearly not a regular defect. Peaceville has released quite a few copies of this album, so you can easily replenish your collection with the most worthy album. -
This album epitomizes the term “cult classic” within death metal, and really metal as a whole. This is straight up, no bs, badass old school Death Metal, and is one of the pillar albums of the early 90’s. Every track is very memorable and catchy, band are playing to their limit, and the mix and production are absolutely without flaw. A true hero of Death Metal. This pressing sounds fantastic, it has a pretty fair share of pops and surface noise, but that is fine by me. I am glad to own this on vinyl and I can safely report that this will give your sound system a thorough rumble! Time to go on a witch hunt!
