Edited 4 years agoAfter "Secrets Of The Beehive" this came as a HUGE disappointment...besides "I Surrender" the rest is so boring, repetitive and irritating drum beats, gone is the melody, gone are those emotions that he could bring when he was inspired, this record sounds like the fall of a genius...and now in fact, he's writing non-music and releasing disturbing records that "intellectual" listeners are judging as genius when in reality there's an artist that used to be my hero and now (in my opinion) has absolutely nothing to say.
The spark is gone my dear David, unfortunately not gone to earth.... -
The new 2018 revision released on vinyl desperately needs a CD release. Would love a copy instead of having to rely on the lossless . Sort it out UMC/Virgin! -
The double vinyl edition is very, very beautiful just like the original cover art for the 'I Surrender' CD Single. It's a very gorgeous cover and beautiful inserts... The cloud white double vinyl is awsome too! -

"Outrageous cries of love"
Dead Bees on a Cake is a smooth yet varried album. Standout tracks "I Surrender" with a beautiful flute solo. A song about death or love? "Thalheim" is a vast soundscape that seems to get better with every listen. "Alphabet Angel" is a slow weird but cool piece. "Wanderlust" is about love and travel... "Shining of Things" is an incredible pairing of David's voice with a string quartet. Gorgeous. "Praise" sung by Shree Maa is cosmic... a salutation to the sun and spirit. "Darkest Dreaming" is the icing on the cake. Beautiful yet too short and leaves you wanting more.
One reviewer mentioned that Chavez had too much of a hand in this and that might be true. Most of the b-sides of the singles from this album were her songs. But more of an influence was Ryuichi Sakamoto and his orchestration and musicianship strongly emphasizing Sylvian's talent.
Not crazy about "Pollen Path" or "Midnight Sun" but at 14 songs, I can't complain. -
Can't believe this has never had a vinyl release. Oh, how I would love a vinyl release of this album.

I understand that many Sylvian fans have been disappointed by his last couple of "solo" albums, namely; Blemish and Manafon. However, for me, this is the only Sylvian "solo" album not to repay multiple listens. I wouldn't go so far as to say that this was a bad record, as such, but it just seems overly smooth, over produced and generally lacking in inspiration. I know that Sylvian has been a long time irer of Tom Waits but Midnight sun - which features Waits' long time guitarist Marc Ribot - is probably a tribute too far. I'm inclined to think that this album suffered for Sylvian's "loved up" (sorry, that's a horrible expression!) mindset at the time. This was recorded whilst married to Prince "protege" Ingrid Chavez, and I can't help but think that he allowed her far too much influence over this material. As so often appears to be the case; married bliss and personal contentment seem to work to the detriment of providing an artist with the inspiration needed for them to produce their best work. That said, this does contain the beautiful Darkest dreaming.
n.b. Things returned to their natural (beautifully depressing?) state of being with the break up of Sylvian's marriage and the subsequent Blemish album. -
WONDERFUL album, superb artwork! A must. One of his highlights. Soundquality test between the standard EU and japanese releases: The japanese CD was much worse soundqualitywise. Lack of precision, less info as USUAL with the japanese releases (incl. D.S. other works too). Pity...
