Notes
"In the jazz business, it's not unsual for a record released under one artist's name to be reissued under another's. It usually happens when a sideman becomes more famous than the original leader. (...) After the trumpeter's death, Gerry Mulligan mentioned in interviews about the 'Birth of the Cool' sessions that Miles Davis was not 'really' the leader of the recording sessions (...) Mulligan intimated that Gunter Schuller, John Lewis, Lee Konitz and himself had had a very strong input and at times 'de facto' leadership. (...) What remains is one of the great records of modern jazz (...) [and] like all iconic records, it needs to heard, not talked about." - Brian Morton.
Notes on the back: "B1 'Deception' is a Miles Davis variation on George Shearing's 'Conception', which the trumpeter prepared for the "Birth of the Cool" project. Miles would record "Conception" mostly as originally composed by Shearing in 1951 - that version is added here as a bonus (B5)."
Bonus tracks: B5 New York, October 5, 1951; and B6 New York, June 20, 1956.
Transparent red, 180g vinyl.
Printed cardstock inner sleeve (with 20th Century Masterworks Colored Series' releases).
Stamped runouts.

A very nice press, wax completely silent, very good notes on reverse. The inner sleeve does seem to generate rather a lot of static, not a problem as I've swapped it for a rice paper sleeve.

This release is fine.. slightly muted but overall an acceptable performance for ~$25.
Though not specifically noted anywhere, the album is mono.
