Edited 15 years agoFor some reason it took 3 years for the band's "Safe As Milk" debut album to emerge as this collector's medium-rare 1970 "Plastic Factory" German pressing. In the States it was provisionally titled "Abba Zaba" after the popular American candy bar, but issued as "Safe As Milk" in 1967 which, confusingly for some, is a track off their second album. It's been given several alternate titles and, in all of its guises, it's also the only official band album with co-written Herb Bermann lyrics and Ry Cooder on guitar.
The folks at Buddah Records obviously decided to do a paint-job on this one, simply by changing the cover and titling it after one of the tracks. Art director Hartmut Pfeiffer got into the swing of things Vliet, with battery-farm chickens bathed in a warm 'meat is murder' glow on the sleeve. I don't think it was shot in a red light district.
A good quality pressing of a landmark debut album of delta swamp-punk fusion blues, with more than a hint of theremin. For Beefheart 'completists' - or check out a "Safe As Milk" CD.
