Review from my KRAutrock's Arabian Nights feature in Audion #46 (2002)...
After g to Intercord Records' fledgling progressive label: Spiegelei (Fried Egg, in English), their eponymous debut was hastily recorded in Munich in 1971 (their home studio in Wintrup wasn't ready yet), and it presented a band with a totally new sound, only ever hinted at slightly before (arguably) by things like Zappa's King Kong or some early Embryo. Apart from that, KRAAN is still a fresh, vital and unique album today, a true milestone in German progressive rock. In it the band fuses psychedelia and jazz until they turn into something else, as Arabic and Eastern European (Balkan) rhythms are integrated seamlessly with funk-rock, and a light eccentric happiness to it all. Wolbrandt's unusual guitar, Pappert's flowery sax, and a most imaginative song style, were all factors. But, more than that, it was their intuitive playing, Arabic textures, witness the extraordinary 18 minute Kraan Arabia that takes up almost half of the album without a wasted minute, and sheer daring of it all that made it such a great album.
