This is obviously an incredible, life-changing, 5-star release, which should go without saying. My only beef is that I waited two decades for this to be reissued, and my local record store (The Mushroom) wants $35 for 15 minutes of music. Why do these kinds of boutique vinyl reissues so rarely come with bonus tracks? The record company could at least throw a cool poster or some Slowdive stickers or the band ’ favorite drink recipes in there, each of which would cost almost nothing in of manufacturing costs. And I think there should be an option to buy everything for a few bucks less (or even more) on regular black vinyl for those of us who prefer its sound quality. 180 grams of colored wax will not often sound better than 120 grams of black wax. (Would you buy three pounds of Spam for the same price as two pounds of fillet mignon?)
Like most of us, I did get spoiled buying full-length LPs new through mailorder or even at concerts for $7-10 in the ‘90s, when vinyl was at its lowest ebb of popularity. I would get the record or cassette if I wasn’t sure if I’d like it, and the CD for a few dollars more if I was sure. I did drop about $20 on Bardo Pond’s seminal and essential Amanita 2xLP (new) at Tower Records in ‘97, which was quite a splurge for me at the time.
Knowing me, I’ll probably break down and buy this Slowdive 12” anyway, if only to show the store (which deals mostly in metal, hip hop, & “smoking” accessories) I appreciate their taking a chance on this item, but I’m waiting for some ultra-detailed descriptions of the sound quality to trickle out from this community. -
