An important historical document and fascinating to listen to but, although the band is fantastic, Bowie's voice is completely shot to hell.
-
Dennis Davis playing double bass/2 bass drums throughout the recording is worth it alone. That dude was a way under rated drummer. His fills are spectacular, just brutal

Bowie's voice is pretty roached but the band is red hot! My copy is badly warped and LP 2 is unplayable. Luck of the draw and no remedy since it came from a small retailer I don't want to burden with the return...for which they are unlikely to receive any compensation.

Edited 4 years agoI'm really pleased with this
i'm glad there was no attempt to "fix" things. Its a nice raw soundboard
it doesn't rock as hard as Cracked Actor as Earl Slick is mostly lower in the mix but its full of nice touches
and its great to have an early show with Dennis Davis & Carlos Alomar. there's a great funky coda on sorrow which gives a flavour of what was to come on Station to Station. I loved all the dubby echo effects especially when listening on headphones.
I skip the Young Americans tracks - hey i know what i like!
some of my favourite moments are when Carlos is in the left channel and Slick is in the right and the 2 guitars are playing off each other- Station to Station style
I wish the official Nassau 76 release was done like this, instead of the pro tooled mess we got.
when this release was announced the thing that excited me most was hearing a late 74 Panic In Detroit and it was worth the wait. its a lot like the Vancouver 76 rehearsal version but with sax playing the lead.
regarding the Sax Bowie stated in the liner notes to some compilation that he enjoyed Sanborn's Echoplex experiments, saying something like "i hoped he'd continue in this style, but he made a lot of money instead".
hopefully future Bowie fans will start their exploration of 1974 with this or Cracked actor and not be turned off by David Live like i was.
well i think this is going to be my album of 2020, i'll be very surprised if anything energises me like the live version of Diamond Dogs-It's only Rock 'n'Roll has done.
it sounds from the recording that the Nashville show was even more "on fire" than the Detroit show, it was a good choice to complete the release
edit: after much listening I retract the comment about it not rocking as hard as cracked actor, Diamond Dogs for instance rocks like beast! -
Reading all the comments, first I was afraid, I was petrified. But, listening to it, I must confess that the sound is not so terrible at all. It's quite even good for a 74 live, and does not look like some muddy bootleg I was beginning to think about.
-
Bowie's voice sounds rough and hoarse. The recording quality is somewhat disappointing with today's technical possibilities. Light rustling in the background.

Edited 4 years agoLoving the sax! In fact I am trying to find a way to mute the rest of the group and Bowie.
