Billboard sez… “We’re SOLD on The AUCTION!!!” But MCA should have sold a movie too, without one this is still a curious concept album that sunk in its original context. However, the concept of players in this POV predated Haley’s “Roots” by several years. Just imagine copies of this LP circulating among college students in a tender post Civil Rights Act era. A rarity to find in good condition.

Axe somehow manages to provide a funky/soulful back drop for his album The Auction. Yes. The album's narrative revolves around the injustices of slavery. Yes. This album cover may not be the best choice to prop up in your living room with one of those fancy record frames. But, yes, if you are a fan of Axe's you should add this album to your collection. Granted, this album doesn't come near the geniusness of his first few albums, but if you enjoyed Strange Ladies, Seriously Deep or even Cannonball Adderley's Big Man/John Henry album you will appreciate this one too.
