Edited 7 years agoAnyone who bought this album on the strength of "Eat It", Yankovic's biggest single of the 1980s, would most likely walk out realizing this man was way more than that single indicated. You could pretty much say that about any of his fourteen albums, but he never blossomed until this record's release. In addition to the five parodies and five originals, In 3-D introduces a trademark of most of Al's subsequent albums - polka medleys. This first one, "Polkas on 45", is mostly Sixties/Seventies rock with two more recent tunes (and Lawrence Welk's theme music) thrown in.
Beyond that, the album is all over the map. Stylistically, most of the originals bear your typical early/mid-Eighties rock/pop sound, with "Buy Me a Condo" going into reggae and "Mr. Popeil" aping a B-52's-esque sound. Lyrically, besides the food and TV songs you'd expect from Yankovic, there's songs about tabloids ("Midnight Star"), a horror film ("Nature Trail to Hell"), and a clothing department ("King of Suede"). Musically, Al and his band are in great form throughout. The debut wasn't a bad record, but this is where Weird Al really went from just another comedic musician to the mad genius from Lynwood, CA.
