Human Mesh Dance – Mindflower

This really deserves a double lp reissue, ambient techno at it's finest! Would love to see all 3 albums actually in a nice box set.

Perfect follow-up to Hyaline less beat oriented and much more ambient. Nothing here is really toe tapping material but yet fans of mid period Biosphere or ambient side of Pete Namlook would completely devour. Lots of spaciness, low hz bass noted and occasional percussion.Theres a sense of continuity which I really respect when I have return listens to the disc. Much more refined that Hyaline HMD was on a roll here and check out SETI his other project with OMNICRON they released 3-4 albums of pure space music on par with anything you would venture to hear in a planetarium.

Taylor 808's second full length cd as Human Mesh Dance. More depth than his first Hyaline, which plays like an extended EP. Progressing from techno, acid and trance on the first into more ambient, techno and dub in an organic form. The album starts out creating a garden type atmosphere with some space dub type tracks. Then comes Wet Moon which is thee best Human Mesh Dance track. With it's eerie far away keyboard melody, dancing space percussions and terrific subaquatic 808 bass kick. What really takes the track is the well placed rave claps "Cha!". Voice transmissions mumbles then another melody part builds and the frequency of the bass quickens with the pace and as it pulls through fading into abyss. Talk about majestic! This is like what hovering over a black hole must feel like. A real epic track no doubt. Really hard to compare this track to anything I have ever heard since.

Skyflower continues the excellent space sounds. Everything sounds ancient but like it was filtered through a crystal sound box yet its all futuristic. Everything is aquatic but spacey at the same time. Almost giving the warmth a cold sound. Birds chirping in the background? Where am I? Some other asthetic world I suppose. Lots of good underwater sounding excursions in an unknown world.

Instinct was a label that enjoyed a certain success in the early to mid-ninties, but was often overshadowed by it's european counterparts. Most know it for launching the career of Moby, but I it as a vital and resonably accessable label for intriguing electronic music in general (you have to keep in mind that back then, obtaining limited pressings of records on small but influencial european labels was much more difficult when living in a small city in North America: no online ordering, no s, just expensive mail order from local indie shops which was often backordered, and usually would not make it!). In '94 Instinct started aggresivly g and releasing ambient albums, helped by the said explosion of quality electronic music from europe. The nice thing about instinct is it generally kept a North American focus, and launched the careers of many fledgling artists who are now well respected producers. Human Mesh Dance was one such act. After the darker acid trance of his first album Hyaline, Taylor 808 (as he then liked to be known as) slowed things down for his second long player. Mindflower is a record that could easily rest amoung his FAX Records contemporaries of the day, presenting mellow electronics, subtle percussive elements with a generally positive sound throughout. I would not go as far as to call it cheery, but where many artists at the time were exploring the darker sides of the mind through music, Mindflower paints a more serene landscape with a distinctly aquatic vibe that has held up well to the test of time.
