It seems to me that "On A Ragga Tip" samples the riddim of Smiley Culture's 1984 ragga hit "Police Officer".

I’ve just read on James Masterton’s UK chart commentary for week ending 15th February 1997 (when the remixes charted at number 31), that upon it’s first release in 1992 it ‘attracted unlikely praise from none other than Paul McCartney’.

Sat in a scaffold lighting rig with a vision mixing engineer slightly worse for wear over the top of Legendary rave in Warrington - looking right down on a packed warehouse going absolutely nuts for Ragga Tip. Agree it comes 3rd in order of best tunes on the ep. So what does that tell you - SL2 were massive back then !!! -

Happy times , Exodus free "do" , 4AM , disused warehouse next to junction 13 - M1 , 1000's of ravers , time travel back there whenever I hear this iconic tune !!!

I've a copy here with same labels but "MPO" etched into run-outs (not DAMONT) and the run-out is within an inch of labels (DAMONT release has greater dead wax space) although tracks still cut at 33. -

Edited 11 years agoThere doesn't seem to be any credit in the original versions for the sample from the following (1984) release (which was re-issued in 1992):

There is a credit in the '97 release though, which is how I discovered this! -
On A Ragga Tip built nicely on the ragamuffin (or even ska!) styling of SL2's previous smash "Way In My Brain" and the memorable hook helped it get to number 2 in the UK singles chart without denting SL2's credibility too much. The third man on the recording was one MC Screechy, who some years later was discovered to be working as a mechanic at a London bus depot.
