Okay my mind is blown. I don't consider myself a Tull fan per se, though I have Aqualung and like it. Picked this up because it was $8 and very clean.

The writing is complex, the arrangements are solid, and each instrumentalist is a technical behemoth. As prog records go, this is right in there with "Larks Tongues", "Court of the Crimson King", "Close to the Edge", "Brain Salad Surgery", etc. "A ion Play" can hang in this very elite club.

I am puzzled who the intended audience is, however, with such an intermingling of (early 70s)'modern' synths and medieval sounding ages. Entire piece seems like a vanity project from the band. Not a bad thing, because they absolutely are killing.

This older pressing sounds fantastic. Clean mix and cleanly track instruments. Drums sound a little strange to me and I don't know why, but it lends to the off-kilter effect of the genre blend.

Anderson's flute work is stunning, and keyboards, guitar, and flute have worked hard to mimic articulations and line work such that they blend perfectly in the ensemble. The drummer may have the hardest job, as there are time changes galore, delving into 13/8, I noticed. He never misses.

I will revisit this record once in awhile because it's a piece of art. Four stars.
