Paul McCartney – Give My Regards To Broad Street

This is a decent, if not pretty good, soundtrack to a pretty so-so film. I enjoy it for its campiness, but that’s beside the point. The re-recorded tracks sound pretty good for what it’s worth, although the originals beat them out, and the reworked third verse in “Ballroom Dancing” is something I’m not super crazy about. The new songs are pretty decent, with “No More Lonely Nights” being one of my favorite Paul songs from this time. The cassette releases of this in the U.S. both happen to be pretty great sounding copies, with the original Columbia being pressed on chrome tape and this 1989 Capitol having XDR encoding. If you’re looking for a copy to get, I would say this one for looks, but either one is fine sound-wise. This album gets a bad wrap and I’m tired of pretending it’s bad.

No More Lonely Nights (Playout Version) is disgusting. Apart from that all the other songs are masterpieces.

Many don’t like this album, but it may be my favorite. I was 13 in 1984 (the best year in music history), and I had this album. I listened to it hundreds of times. I loved it, and I still do.

My OG pressing has long since left me, though I do still have the cover. When I got into vinyl collecting seriously, I bought a new one. I’ve listened to it often, and I love it.

That said, I just picked up this Japanese pressing, and wow, I’m so happy. It sounds so great. I know it’s not the OG Yesterday or Rigby, but it’s Paul, and it sounds fantastic. This is a great album; this pressing is the best sound I have heard this album sound. It’s clean, fat, and sounds excellent. I’m so happy to have this.

So, to all you Broad Street haters, give this pressing a chance and try to come up with an argument that it is not great work from a great Beatle!

PLEASE NOTE: My star rating does not indicate the quality of the album, but the quality of the pressing - The album itself is fun and includes a lot of very well-done remakes of songs from McCartney's past. This pressing in particular is very deep and rich. Don't let reviews on the movie and often times the album itself deter you from picking one up. It's a fun listen and this pressing sings.

I really don't see the disdain for this album. People who review it have to it is just as much of a soundtrack album as it is a studio one, explaining why there are only a few new songs on here. If you want a full album of original McCartney tracks, go listen to Pipes of Peace or something. This was made alongside a film, and this is the music for it. And for those of you complaining about how "even the covers don't have anything new" and "it's the exact same as the original", then may I remind you of 'The Long and Winding Road'.

The original, a sombre late-Beatles song, was a nice ballad, sure, but here, it's been transformed into a late-night, saxophone heavy 80s track which the original cannot touch. Better than the Beatles version in my opinion. As well as this, Eleanor's Dream, an ambient orchestral version of Eleanor Rigby, gives you goosebumps every time you hear that familiar yet ghostly melody poke out of the 6 minute track (although it was unfortunately shortened to just 1 minute for the LP version because of technical limitations, you can't have your cake and eat it too!).

As for the originals, I'm not the hugest fan of 'Not Such a Bad Boy', but the album's only single 'No More Lonely Nights' is just pure 80s goodness, my favourite version being the Playout Version, which is just the perfect 80s McCartney track.

I just feel there's so much hate for this album, from the critics and apparently the Discogs comments too, which it doesn't really deserve. So if anyone else wants to argue with me on the topic, please make sure you've actually seen the film first.

This is an beautiful refreshing of old the Beatles songs and it sonds very good. Yes, why not? We need more refreshing of old classics like this.

I dont understand the bad reviews on this pressing, my copy sounds and looks great. I mean if you don't like the album I understand that but that doesn't affect the quality of the pressing.
