In reference to variant 1. Compared directly to this edition, variant 2, The Beatles - Past Masters: Volume Two. This is tweaked, panned, re-equalized or whatever EMI decided to do to 'bottle the genie'. -
Edited 9 days agoIn reference to variant 2. A 3rd assessment. I have discovered that Sony DVD, DVD/blu-ray, and later CD players consistently have trouble reading Disque Americ discs, especially nearing the end of the CD. As I once upon a time had determined, this sounds great. The sources are open and hot, but not aggressively so. The bass on Lady Madonna and Ballad of John and Yoko is tight, resonant, and truly epic.

I was hoping this would sound better than the 2009 remaster, but it's not the case. Notably, The Ballad of John and Yoko, Get Back and Don't Let Me Down sound either distorted or muffled. I tend to find the '09 remasters a bit bass heavy, but in the case of Past Masters, they just generally sound cleaner. -
Format of Mono is very misleading since only Tack 15 is Mono. It should be removed. 2/23/21
