Third studio album released October 19, 1979.
This was the first of three Tom Petty albums originally released on the Backstreet Records label and distributed by MCA Records. It built on the commercial success and critical acclaim of his two previous albums and reached #2 on the Billboard album chart. The album went on to become certified Triple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
In 2003, the album was ranked number 313 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and 231 in a 2020 revised list.

Good lord, the production on this album is amazing. The drums sound so good -
I just got a copy and listened. It sounds excellent and I didn't have any skipping issues on "Century City." I suspect it's equipment-dependent. I'm using a Rega Planar 3 turntable with an Audio-Technica VM540ML cartridge. -

I have the same edition with the same matrices but on the label on the left instead of MCA - 5105 it appears BSR. Does anyone else have a label like this? In fact, I haven't seen any photos that appear like this. -

Sounds Fantastic! As one would expect from any Chris Bellman cut. Perfect. It’s funny, I’ve avoided playing this record for the same complaint others have expressed. The skip (lock groove) on Century City, which is the least good song on the album imo. But the skip takes the listener right out of the experience. It skipped on my Ortofon 2m reds, my 2m Blues, and every other needle that’s played it. But now that I’ve upgraded to the 2m Bronze?… Skip gone. Weird. Shouldn’t depend on your stylus to that degree. But I’m happy it don’t skip anymore. -
Mine is exactly this because there's no "DJ" on the runouts but what's different is that mine has SS-2 on both sides. -
I suppose the re-mastered 180 would sound better? Hard to dispute the plethora of positive comments on that one. But how much better? While I’ll never know, THIS version (much more affordable) is pretty amazing. Highlights for me — Don’t Do Me Like That just JUMPS out of the speakers, the soundstage on the entire album is fantastic, but especially noticeable on You Tell Me, Louisiana Rain is just so good — the harmonica sounds like it’s in your lap and the drums sound so crisp! (And because some have commented — no skipping issues on Century City)
