Absolutely incredible sound. The vinyl is very heavy and durable, just like the cover. even a VG is worth it with this pressing because the sound will blow you away. Very loud and clear mix, none of the instruments overwhelming each other. This was my first Columbia double-eye pressing and certainly not my last!
-
The sound quality on the 1963 two-eye Stereo pressing far exceeded my expectations and certainly does sound incredible. This absolutely destroys any CD version that’s out there.
-
Haven’t heard a mono press, so I can’t compare it to that but I must say, hot damn…this performance is hot. Talk about a group firing on all cylinders…
Fidelity wise, this is a pretty good, not excellent. That’s due to the source recording - it could be better., but hey, it’s a 1961 live recording.
Overall, you can hear all the instruments clearly, the horns are out front as they should be, but the bass and drums need more depth and prominence in the mix. The recording needs more defined bottom end and there’s some clipping in the big climatic parts. Overall though, the record’s an absolute pleasure to listen to and the entire group absolutely smokes this performance. -

Edited 3 years agoIt's a great set. Too bad the recording quality isn't all that great. But it comes through enough that you get a good sense of what Miles was doing in 1961. "So What" is at its most blaring here, with big-bandish arrangements coming from Gil Evans, though it never feels cheesy.
-
Just bought this today. The performance is good and worth having. The recording is unlistenable at points. When Miles plays loud, the recording is oversaturated and highly distorted. I don't know if I will listen to this much -- a shame because it is such a great cast of musicians.
-
Such as powerful performance. Recently rediscovered my cassettes and it sounds just as great as it always has.
-
Legendary performance and such a big sound coming off a 55 yr old pressing is just the coolest. I have the purple label mono unfortunately in less than VG shape and unable to compare the pressings.
