This soundtrack with the musical cues for Louis Malle's 1958 film Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud was recorded at Le Poste Parisien Studio in Paris on December 4 and 5, 1957.
Jean-Paul Rappeneau, a jazz fan and Malle's assistant at the time, suggested asking Miles Davis to create the film's soundtrack - possibly inspired by the Modern Jazz Quartet's recording for Roger Vadim's Sait-On Jamais (Does One Ever Know), released a few months earlier in 1957.
Davis was booked to perform at the Club Saint-Germain in Paris for November 1957. Rappeneau introduced him to Malle, and Davis agreed to record the music after attending a private screening. On December 4, he brought his four sidemen to the recording studio without having had them prepare anything. Davis only gave the musicians a few rudimentary harmonic sequences he had assembled in his hotel room, and, once the plot was explained, the band improvised without any precomposed theme, while edited loops of the musically relevant film sequences were projected in the background.
The soundtrack was not released on its own in the USA but ten songs from this soundtrack were released as one side of the album Miles Davis - Jazz Track which received a 1960 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance, Solo Or Small Group.
This soundtrack might also be referred to as Elevator To The Gallows (literal translation of the French title), also known as Frantic in the US, also known as Lift To The Scaffold in the UK.

Top notch sound. Very spacious with lots of reverb. I like the fact that they re-created the original size and packaging. This was restocked in 2025 and my copy is very quiet and clean sounding. -

I have this version and also the “famous” MOVLP419. Honestly, for me, this one is just as good, with the advantage that you have everything on a single LP : 24 minutes per side is still ok, for my linear tracker, but to change sides every 12 minutes on a 2xLP is kind of a hassle.
And you can still get it for 15€ on Amazon . At this price it’s a no brainer ;-) -

Very nice pressing,i herd some negative comments about Decca Pressing thats why i prefered this copy and i am very happy with this pressing..Ofcourse it is not gatefold with big pictures like in Decca/Fontana pressing but it is green vinyl and looks perfect... -
Edited 2 months agoPressing is pretty standard WaxTime stuff. Nothing earth-shattering but nothing awful about it, either. People overreact about this label, I think this sounds pretty good. Somehow these WaxTime pressings are the only way to get new copies of a lot of classic Miles discs in my area.

Must have got one of the bad batch . The vinyl is so noisy with clicks and pops that I don't play it anymore .
All my other Sam releases are fantastic . -
My copy is is fantastic condition. No pops, clean pressing. Trumpet comes in maybe a little louder than other instruments, but assume that is by production design.

I don’t know why people commonly regurgitate that SAM records are AAA or “cut from tape” - nowhere do they ever use explicit language like this. And it’s very deliberate. Did you all learn nothing from MoFi? -
This is a 180 gram magenta vinyl. It is a 2023 reissue printed in Europe. The cover has a sticker on the front bottom left which shows a barcode of 9003829975335 with SRPD 0053CV While the spine has the same letters and numbers without the CV. The run out numbers and letters are 010270030-A-1 and 10270030-B-1. The center label carries the catalogue number of SRPD 0053 on both sides which is the same as the number on the cover spine. The label says it is printed in the EU AUME. It was purchase new in August 2024 from a record shop in Hayward Wisc. for $25. It is in mint condition and has only been played once(so far).
