Sketches of Spain has been hailed by music critics as one of the best recordings of the Third Stream genre, which is described as a fusion of jazz, European classical, and world music styles. After Miles Davis and his wife s Davis attended a flamenco performance by dancer Roberto Iglesias, Davis was so inspired that he purchased every flamenco album he could find at a New York record shop.
The album is a pairing between Davis and arranger and composer Gil Evans, with whom he had collaborated before, for a set of compositions in the Spanish folk tradition. The first piece, taking up the majority of the first side, is the adagio movement from Concierto de Aranjuez. Both Evans and Davis agreed that the song had a "strong" melody. The next song, "Will o' the Wisp", is from the ballet titled El amor brujo. The third song, "The Pan Piper" is a traditional piece. The final two songs, "Saeta" and "Solea", are original compositions written by Evans.
The album has been ranked 358th on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list and according to Acclaimed Music, Sketches of Spain is the 393rd most ranked album on music critics' all-time lists. In response to comments that the album is something other than jazz, Davis replied, "It's music, and I like it."

My copy differs a bit with this one, instead of having a standard up left on the back cover, I have it printed just behind the "682079 TL". Anybody knows what's the difference ? -

Immersive mono sound of a genius Davis/Evans collab. I don't have a 1st US mono to compare, but I'd wager they share the same metalworks. The Dutch are generally very skilled record pressers, as this bares witness! -

Coloured vinyl is always a gamble, but this yellow slab of wax really surprised me. Sounds really good in every aspect. The jacket's a bit flimsy, though. But if the music is all that matters, this is a great copy to own. -
Very meager pressing that will disappoint a critical listener. A noisy, non dynamic, at times shrill, copy that isn’t worth seeking out. Most notably is the slight stereophonic quality of Solea. Undeniably, Miles’ trumpet is coming predominantly out of the left channel. This is a digital source with a step down method to achieve the ‘mono’ moniker.

I also have this reissue. I can’t , but I must have picked it up some time in the ‘90’s. It has some surface noise but otherwise sounds really good. I agree that it has quite a wide open sound stage, although it can be a bit bright at times. Does anyone know when this particular reissue was released? -
very happy with my cut, it's dynamic full and emotive. there is just a little noise but only in rare moments and not really an issue. had it for several years now and it's still a fav.

Edited 29 days agoMy copy matches closest to this one and the other very similar one. But perfectly matches neither. So I must have a variation. Which, of course, isn't listed. Anywhere. EDIT: I suppose I should talk about the sound. It's very good. The record reminds me of old western movies or something like that. Whatever it is, listening to it once will not do. You'll keep grabbing it.

Be careful with DOL issued records. I think they are likely cd to lathe copies made in Europe due to lax copyright laws. -
I really liked listening to it. You can feel a bit of dirt, but I think it can be solved with a nice wash. It's wide, clear and dynamic. Also detailed. When I can afford it I can have a better version and judge this one better too.
