This early 90s reissue plays great. I picked my sealed copy up for 10 bucks and I am thrilled. Master is excellent, wonderful separation and balance. Excellent modern soul/AOR shows Lamont using new production styles. As always flawless songwriting and exquisite singing. That perfect combo of sensuality and soul. A truly amazing artist. -

Album Revolution #6:
I had a severe fear about "Lamont Dozier"....My fear was that after the '70's were over, that he would not be able to make a seriously good album....I am glad to see that my fears was put to rest with "Working On You"....
Now signed to "Columbia Records" (brought in by then President "Larkin Arnold"), "Lamont" was able to have full creative control, having full Writing and Producing duties....
The first t and Crown Jewel, "Cool Me Out", in a nice Bouncy song....It also showed that "Lamont" was not afraid of going into the '80's, using "Yamaha CS80 Synthesizers" (courtesy of "Howard Martson), which was very Hi Tech at the time in Music....
"Why (Ain't My Love Enough)", the 2nd Crown Jewel, is a Very, Very nice Slow Jam (and we know "Lamont" was known for those).....It had "Lamont" (I believe), for the first time using Layered Vocals....
The 3rd Crown Jewel, "Nobody Told Me", is a nice Mid Tempo t, with some smooth "Fender Rhodes Electric Piano" and "Moog Synthesizers", surrounding a nice pure Melody....
"Too Little Too Long" may be a quite subtle and Moody Slow Jam, but it was good enough to be the 4th Crown Jewel....
The 5th Crown Jewel, "Playing For Keeps", is light Funk, again layered with the "Yamaha CS80 Synthesizers", which helps it keep the Groove....
The "Interlude" has former "Motown" Musician "John Barnes" on Synthesizer....It's ok, but I feel like a golden opportunity was missed...
Why do I say that?
Because after it was the 6th Crown Jewel, "(You Got Me) Wired Up"....I feel like if the "Interlude" was linked together with this nice slightly Funk t (since it has the same Synthesizer back drop), it would have been fantastic!!!!! , that's what made some of "Lamont's" classic stuff so good (Example: "Interlude/Trying To Hold On To My Woman" from the "Out Here On My Own" album)....
"Starting Over (We've Made The Necessary Changes)", the 7th Crown Jewel, is another Groovy t, with a very nice Melody and some serious Percussion, by the Percussion King himself "Paulinho Da Costa"!!!!!!
The 8th Crown Jewel, "Working On You", is another Smooth Slow Jam, this time with some help from long time friend and collaborator, "McKinley Jackson"....
"Chained (To Your Love)" is an Island flavor t....It's ok, but not all that to me personally...
The last song and last Crown Jewel, "You Made Me A Believer", saves the album from going humdrum, with another very nice Mid Tempo t....
Since I see that this was "Lamont's" one and only album by "Columbia", that meant that this album fell on deaf ears...THAT IS A SHAME!!!!!! This was a VERY GOOD album!!!!! I don't know if it was promotion or interest in "Lamont" himself, but this should have faired much better!!!!! That seemed to be the story of his solo career!!!!
If anyone comes across a copy, do yourself a favor, and at least give it a chance......
