Notes
CSN is a Crosby, Stills & Nash album released in 1977, the fifth album by the group, and the first without Neil Young since his entry into the band. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart; two singles taken from the album, Nash's "Just A Song Before I Go" and Stills' "Fair Game" peaked at #7 and #43 respectively on the Billboard Hot 100.
In the interim since their last studio album of original material (1970's Déjà Vu), Crosby and Nash had recorded three albums as a duo. Stills pursued other projects, including a short career with Manassas and an album and tour with Young.
CSN featured strong writing from all three , the last time for seventeen years that the band would compose songs and handle vocals without major assistance from outside sources. The production of the album fit in well with the ruling aesthetic of the time as featured in other blockbusters such as the Eagles' Hotel California, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours: well-crafted, melodic songs played with precision and balance, essaying the personal travails of the authors.
Many of Stills' songs on the album echo his marital problems, with "Dark Star" returning to the Latin rhythms he had favored all the way back to his Buffalo Springfield days. Crosby continued the existential probings consistent with much of his past work, and Nash offered a very stringent critique of Christianity with "Cathedral". Many tracks were sweetened with a string section, a first on a CSNY project.
Joel Bernstein photographed the trio in serious poses aboard a boat, and initial copies of CSN bore that picture on the cover. The next picture Bernstein took of Crosby, Stills and Nash was a shot of them breaking into laughter at the thought of just having posed as "serious artists." The trio later decided that they liked the second photo better, and it was decided that all future pressings of CSN should bear the "laughter" photo.
The album was released for compact disc on October 25, 1990, and then remastered at Ocean View Digital from the original tapes and reissued on September 20, 1994.

For packaging, this is up there with the best in my 2500+ collection. The textured tip on gatefold with its integrated "photo" just fills this owner with pride. The pressings are QRP usual.... flat and quiet as standard. The mastering is just short of perfect. Theres no doubt the 45rpm benefits come through vs my Bellman 33 but the top end still has distracting moments. Luckily, the beauty of vinyl replay is how a cart can be used to equalise a mastering that leaves a bit to be desired... swapping out the brighter and slightly aneamic modern AT cart for the olde Shure M75 tames the top end and beautifies the recording simultaneously and its then hard to argue against this press as being anything other than definitive! -

Edited 2 months agoPicked up a copy of this for cheap and picture is still attached after all these years. But sounds decent. Not my favorite from CSN but top three albums for sure. Gerorld Johson's bass is awesome on Run From Tears. Great sounding pressing!

Two copies so far, and both have a couple of ticks on "Cathedral" - acceptable for a "normal" pressing, but with these pricey ones, I am not too happy about it. Anyone else? -

Sounds phenomenal except for distortion in the cymbals (see Hi-FiLuis ‘s comment below). Not sure if there’s a bunch of defective pressings out there. -

Can anyone comment on the pressing quality? Ticks, clicks, pops? Rating rn is relatively low for an ap75 -
Bellman brings the crispy brightness to this one. Its not harsh and the sound is very clear and open but i feel its not entirely natural and close to edgy. Vinyl is flat and fairly quiet but not the best. My AT Microline is very neutral, colourless and modern sounding to a fault and i suspect my olde Shure with its plump bottom and rolled tops is the better way to experience this but with 22min side lengths the inner distortion comes raring back. And thats the thing really, records are made and broken on the playback equipment. That being said when my AP75th arrives i fully expect it to balance the force and be the best pressing of this yet!

I have the 'not smiling' photo-version.. Anyone know how many of these were made? -

My favorite so far of the Atlantic 75th releases by AP. Simply stunning. Clear separation of the vocals, tight bass, and an absolutely lush presentation. Makes the songs that I used to think were blah to new heights! -

Amazing pressing. One of the very best sounding records I own. Fantastic separation, richness, balance and detail. Absolutely stunning. Even better sounding than the debut CSN album on the Atlantic 75 edition, presumably because of the improvements in recording between the years they were cut/or condition of the master tapes. (Although that’s excellent too).
