Nektar – ...Sounds Like This

Sounds like a bootleg cut off a Fisher Price cassette player that was recording in the bowling alley next door to a flooded cymbal factory where a tone deaf scuba diver was blaring a brickwalled CD of the album underwater through their Walkman headphones.

It's physically flat and pretty. And that's about it. Fancy colors, numbered, limited or not, I wouldn't be surprised if this and all other "Reissued Sounds" releases are found to less than official. Avoid.

Great sounding pressing, very lively and full, soundstage is great!

In fact it's a raw expansion of rock'n'roll, like Steamhammer and others very intense and driving. Surely a milestone in early 70's prog-rock explosion. Long tracks that float into extasy and come back to earth. All kinds of guitars and orgue orgies.
My 2009 copy is perfect, the sound is a little more transparent. I like that.

I’ll give this one some leeway simply because of the time period and the way it was recorded. I’m not a big fan of live albums (referring to live concert recordings) and while this isn’t a concert, it is played live in the studio without overdubs or multitracking. The mics have pretty good placement and lend a definite live vibe to the recording. I think the mix down could have been better but considering the technology available at the time it sounds pretty dang good.

It’s not the best pressing I own but after a good wet cleaning it’s not nearly as noisy as the previous reviewer indicated. I guess I got lucky! Cleopatra/Purple Pyramid is pretty hit or miss on the QC of their pressings so if you get a mostly decent one, count yourself lucky and hang on to it. Otherwise, buy from somewhere you can return or exchange defective pressings.

Overall it’s worth the investment for a fan.

Nectar move into a more heavy raw hard rock sound w/ plenty of guitar shredding, a rougher looser style & improvised extended jams away from their mash-up of psych-space rock. A solid entry in Nektar's discography & classic document of 70s prog rock.

Sounds Like This was recorded in 2-3 days in 1973 live in the studio, with no overdubs and little editing, so next to the other Nektar albums it sounds rather raw. This is Nektar as a (psychedelic) rock band and sounds close to their live shows of the era. The album offered Nektar an opportunity to record some of the songs they had written in the earliest months of the band, and songs such as A Day in the Life of a Preacher and Good Day remained in their live set.

This version is pressed by CBS. I prefer this over the EMI version I had, which had one side pressed very off centre.

Music - 5, recording quality - 3+, LP record quality - 3- (high hiss level).

It's blue and that's all. no lyric inners, even the psychedelic jellyfish foto on the gatefold inside left is gone and plain black now. Poor edition, disappointing.

For me this always was the favorite Nektar album.
