Pink Floyd – Echoes (The Best Of Pink Floyd)

Run Like Hell, Dogs and Pigs (Three different ones) should be on this. And they also shouldn’t have shortened Echoes.

Next to Relics, this in my opinion is Pink Floyd's best compilation. Plus some excellent editing. A great buy on CD. But a bit cost prohibitive if you're a vinyl head. My only gripes are that it has an edited version of Echoes. Which I find odd, being that this box set is titled "Echoes". My other gripe is this would have been an opportunity for Pink Floyd to finally place "Point Me At The Sky" on 33 1/3. But they didn't take it. They've done that sort of thing in the past. Why they didn't this time or since, is anyone's guess.

I recently purchased my copy for 175 bucks as a NM and plays very good! For me it’s the best compilation because the song list includes many albums and the three eras of Syd, Roger and David, better than Relics, Works, etc...

Although many of the original albums are at least loose concept albums and this is in no way chronological, the mix and segues on this are near perfect. Crap on Best Ofs if you must, but this is the best of Best Ofs.

A glorious compilation that serves as a perfect introduction to the many faces of Pink Floyd. Could it be better? Maybe. But it was so well executed and so far ahead of any compilation that came before (the elusive "Works" or the bizarre "Dance Songs") and after (the abominable "Foot In The Door"), that I still regard it as the definitive Floyd career overview. Highly recommended if you're a Pink Floyd beginner.

First, I will throw the big word out (okay, it was said by others as well):

1. "Echoes" is NOT a "Greatest Hits" album (as is "1" by The Beatles).
2. "Echoes" is NOT a "Very Best Of" album (as are "1962-1966" and "1967-1970" by The Beatles).
3. "Echoes" is literally what it says: an entirely new listening experience based on existing (maybe even familiar) sounds, as is "Love" by The Beatles.

Therefore, "Echoes" should be reviewed for what it truly is, and not be slashed for what it is not.

Sure, back in 2001, when "Echoes" came out, I purchased it as a handy career overview. Their full length albums were still rather pricey and also not my kind of thing (yet). At that time, Discogs was still in an early stage, so I was not warned that this was something different.

If "Echoes" were a greatest hits compilation, songs such as "Run Like Hell" (from "The Wall"), "Not Now John" (from "The Final Cut") or "Take It Back" (from "The Division Bell") should be on it, as they all charted in either UK or US. They are all missing here.

Pink Floyd is essentially an album band, and their albums should be consumed while being in total and complete isolation, with internet, cell phone(s), door bells and other disturbing devices turned off. Just yourself, a playback device and the album, from the very first note until and including the very last. It does not make sense to single out separate songs from the albums.

As such, "Echoes" should be treated as just another Pink Floyd album. In a music collection, it should stand next to "The Dark Side Of The Moon", "Meddle" or "Animals", not instead of these albums. I would even suggest to remove the "compilation" property on all child releases of this master release.

So what is "Echoes"? It is an attempt to tell a story based on existing music from the Pink Floyd albums. Sometimes, the songs are very similar to what you are used to on the albums. Some other songs are drastically shortened ("Echoes" from 23 to 16-17 minutes) or re-edited ("Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is featured here in part 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 and were two separate tracks on the "Wishing You Were Here" album, part 1-2-3-4-5 and part 6-7-8-9, respectively). All songs are in a continuous sequence, only limited by the capacity of the medium.
The plot/synopsis of the story? I can't tell. This is "Echoes". This is not "Tommy" by The Who or "Arthur" by The Kinks, where the stories were already outlined before the first note was written. "Echoes" reverses this concept. The music is presented and you are challenged to "do" something with it while listening. The outcome may even vary upon the mood you're in.

this LP boxset is a total segued piece of garbage with a track listing that seems random and disted. Sorry not Sorry! a total fail. sick to the full LP's and move on.

Whats the difference between this remaster and the 2006 remaster, or are they the same?
