Notes
Reckoning (alternatively titled File Under Water) is the second from fifteenth studio albums (1983-2011) by American alternative rock band I.R.S. Records.
Performed by: Michael Stipe - lead vocals
Certain LP copies, the European CBS CD, the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab reissue, and certain editions of the 25th anniversary 2-CD release feature a 30-second coda shortly after the end of "Little America". This coda is also used as a bookend in the companion short Left of Reckoning, a collage of film clips shot at the Whirligig Farm in Rabbittown, Georgia set to the first six songs on the album.

Edited 5 months agoSo this is the purple translucent non-club Edition with a barcode right??? Calbi baseball... RCA1... my God am I really doing this LOL? I don't really have any other pressings to compare since I bought this new and never needed another one but yeah still sounds pretty damn good. Straight up though, I'm not a particularly nostalgic person, but this one, and Murmur take me straight back to being 19.... I once went to a show where Pylon opened for REM, and I LEFT after Pylon... back in the day it took me a minute to get into these guys... and then a couple years later I saw the Minutemen open for them about a month before Boon ed.... oh yeah and I bought an REM Howard Finster bandana at that show...

Is there a way to tell (if you have a sealed copy) whether you have this Quiex version or the standard black club variant?
-
When you have an old master like Greg Calbi involved, you know the vinyl is going to sound great and this is no exception. A classic vintage vinyl. It doesn't get much better than this.

Why is this so much more rare than the Murmur MFSL Anadisq? Were there fewer copies pressed? -
Edited 9 months agoFound a super mega clean copy at my local atique and oddities store for a fair price and after cleaning a little, putting it on the table, and turning the volume up I am completely over the moon with the sound of this! Everything just sounds perfect to these ears! Absolutely silent pressing and the highs and mids are so layered and clear. What a great early album from a great band from my youth.
It is semi see through yes... -

Dynamite sounding LP, with a stereo-mix providing great clarity & space to the recording. Rhythm-section is driving & punchy, sounding all the more powerful or delicate the louder you play it. It sounds live & immediate, with good separation & definition projecting 'right-there' and fluidly all-around at the same time. Hell, even Stipes lyrics are discernible. Vinyl itself is whisper-quiet as well... -
Anybody know what year this version is from? I had a used copy of the 2009 version with copious static noise. I saw a glut of these on the market recently and decided to purchase. This is a very good pressing.

Edited 9 months agoYep - dead quiet.Translucent? HA! This picture is misleading - or I got screwed out of 1 beautiful lp...mine's dark, yet slightly translucent
dammit!
gotta say: wasn't happy with the high end on this mix - the cymbals were muddy but ok, and the vocals had clarity, but the whole mix was a little dulll, maybe that was the intention originally -

I have a copy of this pressing, and a few questions about it. Who cut the lacquer, and why are they not credited in the runouts? Was it mastered by someone other than Greg Calbi? My copy sounds mostly good, though perhaps a bit lacking in midrange. Several of the songs on the "R" side seem to have a left channel deficiency. I still need to put it through the Spin Clean and see if that helps.
