Chick Corea – My Spanish Heart

Styles on the LPs are so diverse it's hard to create much artistic cohesion. My faves are the fantasies on Side 4. RL (Bob Ludwig) did four great lacquer cuts, although this Pitman pressing is rather noisy.

Fantastic sounding version. Japanese vinyl at its best. Highly recommended. And better sounding than my OG CD.

I understand the intentions of the predecessor, but to counterbalance the previous comment. For me it's a great album, and the electronic instruments on this album are just a stigma of the times. Hancock and Peterson experimented similarly. We can't look at it from today's point of view, just as you can't compare it to the performances of classics like Segovia. This is Chick, in a very good version with characteristic harmony and recognizable style. It is your choice if you like, but for me it is great album.

Sometimes I wonder how long it takes to form a timeless view of the value of a piece of music. For instance, The audience walked out on the premier performance of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, today it is enjoyed by most, what seemed radical and atonal is today considered a significant step in the development of modern classical composition. Composition comes and goes with fashion, similarly do instruments. There aren't any musicians composing for the harpsichord today that I know of.
The issue for me with this recording by Chick Corea, is the compositions aren't as timeless as some of the great Spanish tunes played by the likes of Segovia. Most disconcerting is the use of some of the earliest digital keyboards which place this record in the decade of 1970.
So for me, we have Corea playing some forgettable tunes on some distinctively clunky instruments. Don't think this will rate very highly in the Corea Cannon in a few centuries.
