Initially specialising in "British music played by British artists" it then became a label primarily specialising in spoken word recordings and other esoteric or commercially marginal material. They also released a large amount of classical recordings, focussing mainly on choral works.

Due to financial problems, Argo Record Company Ltd., was taken over by Argo Records label.
