Just Say Yes
Profile: |
Originally released in 1987, Just Say Yes was Sire Records' winter CD sampler. It contained remixes and non-album tracks of artists on the label, most of which were considered New Wave or Modern Rock (all would eventually fall under the genre Alternative rock). Its success spawned a series of albums, the subtitles of which were variations on the 'Just Say' theme. |

The first two volumes of this series were manna from Heaven for urban college students in the late '80s. You could buy them anywhere, they were cheap, and all the tunes were new and interesting, and more just promoting the Sire brand than any particular releases. The variety was great, too: there were fun dance tracks alongside post-punk, indie pop, and jangly UK bands we had never heard of. It was just like what we were hearing on college and "modern rock" radio stations.
As the series progressed, it became less consistent, with more tracks seemingly included just to promote the latest gs rather than because they were particularly good. Sire was also just falling behind the times; they never got on board with house music or grunge, and other branches of Warner were pulling ahead of them in the alt-rock race.
