Great selection of new vinyl and CDs (though of course you're completely allowed to open things up and have a listen, be warned that there is only one turntable/CD player). Selection includes plenty of punk/hardcore/grind (including local stuff!) etc, lots of hip hop and a (reasonably sized) section labeled "beats" which includes lots of Warp Records, Planet Mu, Bpitch Control, etc. Infinitely better selection and prices than Megatunes in my opinion. Friendly staff.

Big selection of new/used (I think so) vinyl. Caters largely to the DJ crowd although there is tons of Warp, Planet Mu, Tigerbeat6, etc too. Some records are pretty expensive although last time I went in everything in the store (excluding turntables, software and other gear) was 50% off. The reason everything was 50% off was because Phonics closed for a while and then re-opened. Plenty of tasty whitelabels in the bins. Two or three turntables to listen to stuff on. -

That the thread went three posts without mentioning the famed Recordland is sad.

Outkast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below 4LP in used condition
I picked that particular album out and went to go pay thinking it wouldn't be that much, he first asked me why I peeled the price sticker off of the sleeve while it wasn't there in the first place (great), he then proceeded to quote the record at $40, which I was a little reluctant about paying, but oh well, I wanted it that day. After inspecting further he doubles the asking price to $80 at that point I walked out of the store. I don't like the way he treats his customers, the prices he charges (even supposing a huge amount of the records are in shit condition) and most of all the way he treats his customers.
and oh, I ended up finding the same album online, brand new for $12 along with $8 for shipping. -

Wow. This is pretty surprising. Even paying $40 would have been way too much. I know most stores like that give you a lot better deal if you are buying a ton of records. Like if you deal you're just as likely to get 50 records for $100 as you are ten.
I've always gotten really great deals there and found a super amount of rarities. But I live in Edmonton and haven't dug there honestly in 5-6 years. I was hoping to go down during the summer and have the wife leave me there for a whole day to dig.
Maybe because it was a popular name like Outkast. We have a guy in Edmonton at the flea market that sells records that you can buy for $5 on here for $40. Just because they are recognizable old school hip hop names. From this same guy I've bought synthpop and disco records from $1-$5 that go for hundreds here because he has no clue about those records.
I wonder what kind of disco and synth records are lurking in the basement of Hot Wax. I went there 10 years ago and found a lot of great things. When I went there about 5 years ago they wouldnt let me go in the basement. -

I just went to hot wax's basement 6 days ago, and honestly, I couldn't see anything but the most common rock & roll records by the thousands. -

Hasn't changed much since six days ago it seems. I was in there today and I didn't end up buying anything. Save your money and go to the Oolong teahouse next door and pick up a tin of the bourbon sweet vanilla tea.
Another thing I managed to forget to mention; he told me the album was an import. Not only is the album definitely not an import, half the packaging for it was printed in Canada! Hilariously enough my girlfriend ventured in there a few days ago and when asking "the guy" that works there what was currently playing on the stereo he took the CD out of the player and handed it to her, free of charge!
I met a woman a few days ago who was telling me that her husband owns piles and piles of techno, house and the like--new and old, and that a big (enough, apparently) portion of it is for sale. I got her business card but she told me her husband is out of town for the next couple of days. When I eventually make it to their house I'll post back with a review and information (if they permit of course). I'll see if they know of any other good record stores that aren't mentioned in this thread.
Phonics update: I heard that they may have closed again, but I drove by maybe a week ago and they appeared to be open--in a freshly cleaned space no less. -
