Does anyone know if promos in the 80's were pressed in one big batch or were they pressed in different plants?

The reason I ask is that I have three 7" promo's from the band FX with the same problem. All three have been pressed off center, which is causing it to sound awful. I was tempted to buy another one hoping it won't have the same defect but I didn't want to take the chance until I had more information.

if it's worth it to you, it's possible to re-cut the hole more centred.

no clue about pressing plants, though I don't see why they'd do multiple runs. I could see them correcting the issue if they noticed partway through, though.

you can recenter the record if you "raise" the turntable's platter with some slipmats, so the record is not centered on the spindle anymore. Works best with turntables that have a height adjustable tonearm base and short spindle.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm gonna try that.

I've been able to fix this with large-hole singles by making a custom insert. But yours is probably a small-hole single.

Were all three of the promos the same release? If that's the case they're probably all like that - bad QC at the pressing plant. If it's a 7" with a small hole you can try a 7.3mm drill bit and carve by hand if you have nerves of steel. I use one for spindle holes that are too small.

Most off center issues can be fixed with a round metal file modifying the hole.
Even big hole 45s can be fixed this way. Its easy.

yes, but still a pain to align every time since the off-centerness will be different on each side or just one side being off-center

Get a Nakamichi Dragon CT or TX-1000 turntable. They have built-in self centering mechanisms :)
